Total Application Support Solves Circulation Heater Request
Problem:
A large overseas engineering firm was contacted by a Korean petrochemical company to build an up-to-date processing plant. The requirements were a methane preheater to heat 155 pounds (70 kg) per hour of hydrogen from 50°F (10°C) to an outlet temperature of 645°F (340°C), at an operating pressure of 450 psig (65 kPa), with a maximum allowable pressure drop 10 psi (1.5 kPa)
Solution:
Watlow recommended a 6-inch (15 cm) circulation heater with 1-inch (25 mm) inlet, 1.5-inch (38 mm) outlet, 500 pound (226 kg) steel construction with fifteen 304 stainless steel elements designed for maximum 25 W/in2 (3.9 W/cm2) watt density. Additionally, the heater assembly had a NEMA 4 housing and Type K thermocouples for process and high-limit temperature control. The heater was designed at 101 kW, 3-phase, 440V, 60Hz.
In addition to the circulation heater, Watlow offered the complete control panel to run the 101 kW heater, which included a 150 ampere SCR, a SERIES 340 high-limit controller, a NEMA 4 enclosure with all necessary indicator lights, push button controls and main disconnect switches. The process controller on this particular control panel was supplied by the customer
